News . . .

Are you within 1,000 feet of the Lake?

If you are within 1,000 feet of a lake, pond (some wetlands) or flowage, and/or 300 feet from any other navigable body of water or in its floodplain whichever is greater, you are in a Shoreland area and special regulations regarding tree/vegetation that can be removed and how much vegetation can be cut apply. There are also special building restrictions that apply to the Shoreland area. Check the map to see if you are within the 1,000 feet. The shaded light blue area represents the 1,000 foot Shoreland area. These restrictions are not new and there have always been zoning regulations for Shoreland areas, but legislation (NR 115) is currently being worked on to further enhance them.

LWIA 501(c)(3) Exempt Status Approved!

Lake Wandawega Improvement Association's 501(c)(3) application for exempt status was approved by the Internal Revenue Service. That means your membership dues and contributions to LWIA are tax deductible!! If you are not already a member, there's no better time to join and help to improve, protect and sustain Lake Wandawega for current and future generations. Membership dues are only $20.00 annually and each household may have up to two paid memberships. By joining now, your membership will run through June 30th of 2008.

You might be asking yourself, ‘What can my $20.00 do for the lake?’ LWIA is the only organization representing Lake Wandawega eligible for state and other grants. Most lake studies and projects are costly and available grants typically cover only 50% to 75% of the necessary funds. The balance of the funding must come from our membership dues, contributions, and fundraising efforts. That's where your $20.00 can represent as much as $80.00 towards lake projects and studies for Lake Wandawega. If you haven't already, please consider joining Lake Wandawega Improvement Association.

For additional information you can email us at Membership Information or contact us via postal mail at LWIA, PO Box 902, Elkhorn WI 53121. If you have decided to join, download a membership application and mail it in.

What are those weeds plants in the lake?

Many people think that Lake Wandawega has lot of weeds. Technically, that's wrong. What Lake Wandawega does have is an extremely healthy aquatic plant population. Approximately 21 different ones! Among these is Water shield, Large leaf pondweed, White water lily, Bushy pondweed and a host of others. Chara is also present in the lake, but it's not a vascular plant ... it's actually a 'branched multicellular algae'. It's a good algae to have in the lake!

Hmmm ... there are two exceptions to the aquatic plant vs. weed. Lake Wandawega also has an abundance of Eurasian milfoil and a couple occurrences of Curly leaf pondweed. Based on land plants, you could put these into the category along with Burdock, Dandelions and Buckthorn, and you can keep calling these two weeds.

We'll have some more articles about what's happening with the aquatic plants in the lake very soon. In the meantime, we put together an informative pamphlet on some of the good, and not so good, aquatic plants found in Lake Wandawega. LWIA members received this pamphlet in their renewal mailing and now you can download it in PDF format at Aquatic Plants in Lake Wandawega (1.7MB, legal size paper). Take it with you next time you’re down by the water and see if you can identify some of plants living in our lake.
